More Vetta Borne More Vetta Borne

Vetta Borne is a name you may not have heard before, but the influence of this Melbourne/Naarm-based artist stretches from Australian indie darlings to the producer realm of LA, to the idolised J-Pop and K-Pop cultures taking the world by storm. In Chappell Roan fashion, Vetta Borne really is your favourite artist’s favourite artist.

Known for producing, engineering, and sometimes even mixing her own tracks, Borne is paving the way in predominantly male-dominated industries. You may have unknowingly heard her production work on George Alice’s triple j Unearthed High single Circles, collaborations with Young Franco, or via Charli XCX’s cover of her song On Fire for triple j’s Like A Version

Vetta Borne’s newest EP, Afterlife, dropped yesterday, weaving personal experiences of love, loss, and self-discovery amongst a soundtrack of hyper-pop realness inspired by the flashy stylings of Y2K.

To celebrate the release of her latest work, Vetta Borne takes Purple Sneakers through a guide of the early 2000s pop classics that resonated with her most, from music’s queer icons to the cinematic coolness of Angelina Jolie

Britney Spears - Gimme More

I remember having Britney Spears - Live from London 2000 on VHS when I was a little girl.

I watched that tape so many times that the tape broke. I love Britney so much. I grew up with Britney as my idol. She was/is everything to me. Gimme More has had me in a chokehold since the first time I heard it. The simplicity of the chorus is perfect. The production has a groove that just can’t be recreated. It’s perfect.

Lady Gaga - Starstruck

I know this track may seem like a random pick out of the many hits Lady Gaga has made. But something about this one is just perfect to me. I love a song that makes me swing my hips.

Nelly Furtado - Say It Right

Nelly Furtado and Timbaland are an undeniable duo. The songs they created together were the perfect blend of their worlds. What inspires me most is the ability to have such a heavy beat wave around those emotional melodies and lyrics. Chefs kiss.

Janet Jackson - Feedback

My queen! Janet's ability to turn her vocals into almost a percussive element in songs has always been an inspiration to me. She could sing a cappella, and you’d bop your head along.

Song: Rihanna - You Da One

Stunning. Catchy melody. Interesting/heavy production. I love everything about this song.

Kylie Minogue - Padam Padam

Kylie really made another timeless classic. This song makes me feel hot. That’s it. I love feeling hot. And I love music that enables that feeling.

Artist: COBRAH

COBRAH has some of the sickest and cleanest productions behind those vocals. I love how everything is mixed. The vocals are mixed in such a tasteful/interesting way, that it almost makes you question if this is a real person or not. 10/10.

Movie: Wanted - Angelina Jolie

I’ve had a crush on Angelina Jolie since forever. This movie and Angelina in Mr And Mrs Smith? Are you kidding me?! I could write a thousand songs inspired by her energy in these movies.

Producer: Scott Storch

This man can make you groove. Every song he’s produced is just so sexy. The minor keys he tends to stick to, the groove of the drums and the sound, the choices he makes... His beats really would make me write something nasty (in a hot way), as almost every artist he’s worked with has. To make beats that make people feel sexy? Now that’s one of my goals.

Producer: Timbaland

Need I say more? The man is a genius. I love his ability to work over so many different genres but still leave his fingerprint. You know when Timbaland produced a song, and he doesn’t even need to mention it. Not to mention, he’s definitely somebody who could add something to your song in 5 minutes and turn your demo into a hit. Genius.
