With thousands of “W” hands in the air all amid a freak sandstorm that had just swept in, WU-TANG CLAN put on an impressive show for the final night of Coachella Music Festival.

It was a sweet sign out considering the lack of hip-hop in the line-up (as compared to 2012’s Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg and Kanye) Instead, the group brought it back East Coast with gritty NY beats, violent inner-city scenes and dark lyrics – not your typical Coachella act.

Wu-Tang brought out all their classic catalogue hits- between ‘C.R.E.A.M’ and ‘Bring Da Ruckus’ they whipped out a fierce rendition of ‘Protect Ya Neck’.

For a bunch of ol’ dirty bastards, they are still fresh and performing as a unit. They entertain the volatility of a young rapper with the finesse of the experienced performer. Their strong vocals flowed through one other and up against a full crowd, without even trying to woo - it’s clear they were dead serious.

A classical conductor led a full string-section orchestra backing the boys without overwhelming their act. The set was minimalist- backed by their trademark “W” lit up in red and flashing lights spinning out into the packed crowd.

Unlike the original radio edition, this performance of ‘Protect Ya Neck’ wasn’t censored and the vocals were tougher, shouting down the mic. Even more incredible, it looked like the reunited group were all getting along and having a good time. We all wish we were at Coachella but sometimes a live stream is just enough to get us by. Wu-Tang Clan are set to release an anniversary album later this year, celebrating 20 years since the release of their 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).
