Live Review: Yeo 'Icarus' (Official Video)

2 November 2015 | 6:54 pm | Katie Rowley

YEO is a busy guy. He's just finished up a string of East Coast dates to celebrate the release of his new single ‘Icarus’, which now has a video.

YEO is a busy guy. He’s been on the road for nearly 18 months, playing headline shows in NYC and LA, two Australian tours, a showcase here and there, onstage collaborations with Peking Duck at this year’s Stereosonic, locking down vocals with Hermitude and just finished up a string of East Coast dates to celebrate the release of his new single ‘Icarus’, for which he’s just put out this lovely little video.

Produced by Tobias Willis and featuring the languid moves of Melbourne dancer Alix Gardiner, the clip is shot not on widescreen, but with a vintage-styled squarer ratio. (Did somebody say Instagram?)

The murky holographic-like bodies skulk behind shadows, the dark shots fractured by lances of disco ball lights. There’s a retro Flashdance feel to it what with the baby blues and hot pink colour schemes.

In the midsection we cut to Yeo on a late night amble through a metropolitan red light district, where there’s ‘so many foreign men in the shadows’. Cue a dodgy looking bloke who enters from stage left; there’s something kinda kitsch and klunky about the video that makes it an interesting watch.

Throughout the video Yeo remains in the shadows, with the focus instead on the girl dancing like an angelic bird-thing so that when he sings ‘she’s all the way up there/ when she’s lonely she’s so beautiful’, the title becomes clear.

The video comes in time for the release of his new album ‘Ganbaru’. Catch Yeo at the following tour dates:

November 20-22

Tatong, Victoria

December 30-Jan 1

Loch Village, Victoria

March 5-8

Brisbane, QLD
