Live Review: PREMIERE: Holiday Party take a turn for the surreal with 'I'm Still Here' video

8 November 2017 | 2:26 pm | Freya Dinesen

Holiday Party have today released their highly anticipated video for debut single ‘I'm Still Here’, gifting some pretty fine footage in celebration of Aus Music Month.

The party duo was founded by Brisbane's Luke McDonald and Mel Tickle and stems from various different collaborative projects in the Sunshine State. This debut single is simply irresistible, and deservingly won them a Triple J wild-card spot at this year’s BIGSOUND festival.

Having previously made music videos for Major Leagues and The John Steel Singers, Luke created this twisted Sci-Fi flick over two spring nights in Brisbane. Delving a little into his inspirations, Luke explains:

"The video took influence from some of my favourite films "2001" and Jonathan Glazer's "Under The Skin". I love the idea of physical change/transformation through fast movement. Making it was also a nice excuse to venture into some amateur CGI.”

The footage opens with flickering lo-fi imagery, establishing a surreal vintage vibe as we see intermittent snippets of the pair sitting passenger in the back of a car as it goes through a warmly lit tunnel. If you’ve seen any quirky sci-fi horrors born out of the 1960s/1970s, there are some splendid nuances from its archetype style underpinning the unsettling subtleties of the clip, brilliantly juxtaposed by the happy-go-lucky feel on the tune.

This video completely nails the band’s working conceptual premise of what could be a twisted end to a teenage house party.

Since the release of ‘I'm Still Here’ in June, the Holiday Party's succeeding six months has seen them go on to play alongside GL, Hatchie and most recently Cloud Control. There are definitely some big things brewing from this guys, we’re also pretty stoked to share that these guys are currently in the studio finishing their next batch of songs, with a follow up single scheduled for release early-February 2018. If the success of their debut is anything at all to go by, we're in for another party!
