Live Review: Get to know Dameeela before Laneway's Block Party

1 February 2018 | 9:26 am | Emma Jones

Set to play at Red Bull Music x I OH YOU's Block Party debut at Laneway Festival, we get to know one of Brisbane's most exciting DJs, Dameeela!

With St Jerome's Laneway Festival just around the corner, excitement is at an all time high. This year, they're introducing a mini festival, the Block Party, within the festival thanks to I OH YOU and RED BULL MUSIC, and while yeah, sure, there's headliners on all the other stages, a part of us is particularly excited for this line-up. Recruiting a bunch of up-and-comers as well as some headliners in their own rights such as BASENJIWIKI and WILLARIS. K in each city, it's the emerging acts that really have our attention.

Brisbane DJ DAMEEELA is one such act. Having cut her teeth DJing for the past few years on the Brisbane circuit, she's made a name for herself for being perhaps the best hip-hop DJ and connoisseur in her hometown, and the regular spots at one of Brisbane's biggest clubnights, Wavey, prove that. Not only this, but she also hosts her own radio show, splits her time also DJing in duo Spare Time, and has recently supported MNDSGNJOYCE WRICE and more. As if that really wasn't enough, she also performed alongside MISS BLANKS as her DJ for Brisbane's Listen Out festival - and most of these achievements have happened in the past six months.

Truly on the rise, Laneway's Block Party is Dameeela's opportunity to make her presence known on the national stage, and we cannot wait to see what she does in the months to come. To get to know her a little better, she's given us a curated playlist of her favourite tunes at the moment, so check it all out below and then catch her at the Red Bull Music x I OH YOU Block Party debut at Laneway Festival!

Kari Faux - Color Wheel (prod. by Matt Martians)

This track starts in such a cool way and then somehow gets even better. Kari Faux lends her confident aurora to me while I'm getting ready.

K, Le Maestro - HATIN ON ME?!

This bumpin Kendrick rework never fails to set an energetic mood. Reworks seem to always grab my attention, and this one doesn't mess too much with Kendrick’s voice or flow which makes it catchy AND tasteful.

Axl - Come Dawn

Ooo just listening to this is getting me extremely excited for Laneway. Another rework where the flow and voice isn't butchered. Prepare to get on your feet thanks to this one!

Walla C - Payback

Melb producer Walla C released this tune a few months ago; it's definitely one to dance to! I certainly over-played this one on Brisbane radio, but I still think it deserves more recognition.

Zikomo - Finesse (Zikomo Remix)

Nothing like a mainstream track being remixed in a cool way plus I definitely have a soft spot for Bruno Mars. The original track has a whole lot of momentum behind it right now with Cardi jumping on, but much love to Bruno for bringing back a pleasing 90s nostalgia track (and video).

Yaeji - Raingurl

Can't leave this track off any list, Yaeji is so inspiring with her effortlessly cool persona. That's how I'm tryna be

Tommy Genesis - Tommy

"Wow, can't believe this woman invented baths" (See the video clip for this track on YouTube ASAP). This song is the absolute IDEAL track to get ready to, Tommy's captivating voice, strong presence and hot beat make it insanely motivating.

SwuM. - Sizzurp

It was hard to choose my favourite SwuM track. I have followed this producer for soo long on Soundcloud, he has taken a big turn in terms of genres but this rework fills the Three 6 hole in all of my Soundcloud playlists.

Spyde - Pretty Boy

This track bangs. The original and the rework. I know for a fact I could play this in the car and my friends would immediately get wild. We owe a lot to Soulja Boy.

Ski Mask The Slump God X A$AP Ferg

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Ski. This song is THE BEST track to get hyped to. Thank you Ski for bringing OG Timbaland back in a modern way, now drop your damn tape already.
