Live Review: PREMIERE: Mo Aung teases new ambient hip-hop tape, 'Marionette'

Meet Mo Aung, a Burmese/Western Sydney based musician who is creating a unique sound inspired by his intricate focus on detail. Mo is an active and established beatmaker in Sydney's underground hip-hop scene, solidifying himself as a an overall creative innovator. There's a chance you've seen his work for, Midnight Swim, Sydney Romantics and INQ Minds. Now, he turns to his solo release, 'Marionette', a calm introduction to the producers inner mind. The 4 track beat tape will be released on the 29th of October digitally, with the 7 inch vinyl scheduled to be available at a special launch event in November. Today, we are premiering the project's closer, 'Whispers At The Pagoda' before its official release tomorrow.

'Marionette' is a vast and unique project, one that moulds together Mo Aung's technically ability as a musician with his deep learning through his heritage and experiences growing up in Western Sydney. It's truely expressive, and has been described by the label as, 'ambient hip-hop', a genre somewhat unheard of before, but an interesting lens to the view the EP from. 'Whispers At the Pagoda' explores this sonic ethos. Its main focal point is a gorgeous plucked string section surrounded by the tracks unique atmosphere. As the breakbeat minimal rhythm section enters the fold, other melodic elements enter the mix, including an eerie, mellow synth line, glitchy percussion, and ethereal field samples.

On the creation of the EP, Mo Aung stated, “Marionette is a response to the current political climate in Burma but through the process, it has also been a discovery of self and have brought a closer connection to my origin”.

Celebrating the arrival of ‘Marionette’, Beat Kitchen Records is teaming up with Bottega [Studios] to host a special daytime celebration. An intimate listening session of Marionette will take place as the centrepiece of the afternoon, with the opportunity to purchase a copy of the 7 inch vinyl, and live printed, made to order T- shirts. There will also be some live performances as well as Beat Kitchen Records on the decks in between.

The EP is released by up and coming Sydney crew Beat Kitchen Records. Their cult adored parties on top of a Marrickville rooftop have hosted some of Sydney's favourite selectors Honey Point, Adi Toohey, Bobby Vibe Positive + more. They also host their own in house, live streamed radio show, and content series, 'Local Joints' a spotlight on local independent eateries across the city.
