Live Review: Two People go introspective and spiritual on 'I'm Tied, To You'

21 May 2018 | 8:28 am | Holly O'Neill

After two years of working on their debut LP, TWO PEOPLE are back with 'I'm Tied, To You' an introspective exploration of identity over a progressive beat.

For the last two years since the release of their debut singles, TWO PEOPLE have been working hard. 'I'm Tied, To You' is the duo's lead single from their upcoming LP and an elegant first taste of all that work. The progressive house track combines classic sax, live percussion and warm synth textures with melancholy lyrics to make for an immersive experience of a track.

The whole track expands on the duo's core concepts from their earlier releases; unearthly vocals, slow burning production and an emotive pull. Phoebe Lou's resonant performance remains steady but is dripping with emotion throughout, talking out her own internal dialogue in her subtle Aussie twang. Of the track, she says 'I'm Tied, To You' is more introspective than it seems, saying it's "about being tied to yourself. There is a fragility and frustrated loneliness in that... Here, the ‘you’ is myself."

The subtle growth and almost spiritual building of the track leads to an emotional catharsis of dense chords and layers in the climax. As the track builds the repetition of the chords and vocal loops pull your body along with them, with chords intensifying and harmonies heightening emotion. But even in the end, with all the layers stripped back and the title of the track echoing into the soundscape it's just as affecting.

Two People are set to debut their live set, and no doubt plenty more fresh material, at this year's Splendour in the Grass. The duo are focussing on bringing all the emotion and energy of their tracks to the stage, so you better get a good spot front left on Saturday for a intense dance party.
