Live Review: Solo Dan teams up with Quincy for feel-good bop, 'Hotstep'

24 July 2018 | 11:07 am | Emma Jones

It's been a minute since we've heard from SOLO DAN. Once one half of Perth duo GRRL PAL, now turned solo producer, he briefly introduced himself to us last year with 'So Hey'. Since then, he's been relatively quiet apart from a recent remix for CLIENT LIAISON, until last week. Now he's back with 'Hotstep', a feel-good, upbeat, high energy bop that we can't get enough of.

Teaming up with fellow Perth artist, QUINCY (a performer from the Reunion Islands who Solo Dan had seen performing with an African dance crew called Soukouss Internationale), Solo Dan hones in on eclectic synth sounds and a frenetic drum line while letting Quincy's voice absolutely soar, injecting the track with some serious soul. What could be a late night jam or a poolside-afternoon groove, 'Hotstep' is short and sweet and taps into the exciting potential Solo Dan has had all along since the early GRRL PAL days. What he's done here is built on his many years of producing, crafting an exciting slice of summer-y synth house goodness and by utilising his exceptional skills as a collaborator, he's used Quincy's strengths to his advantage to elevate the track even higher.

Having begun writing the track back in 2017, Dan arranged a writing session with Quincy prior to ever even hearing him sing. Speaking on how 'Hotstep' came together, Dan said, “I’d never actually heard Quncy sing until he came over to my studio one day to write. He had a big night out the night before, going to a local dance party to meet up with a love interest. After looking for a while he couldn’t actually find him, but he didn’t seem to mind as he got so swept up with dancing and having fun. The hook is essentially about him not caring if they went home together because he just had the best night out dancing anyway.”

The rest, as they say, is history with 'Hotstep' shining an exciting light on both artists. We can't wait to see what comes next!
