Live Review: LISTEN: Japandroids 'Jack the Ripper'

6 April 2012 | 9:00 am | Hannah Story

This is a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds cover that is surprisingly worthy. It's got all the noise rock you've come to expect from Japandroids.

Let me make this clear from the very beginning. This song is not and never will be equal to the original by NICK CAVE AND THE BAD SEEDS. I’m just letting you know where my loyalties lie- with Mr. Cave and his sexy, sexy demeanour.

But admittedly this chilled garage cover from Canadian noise rock lords JAPANDROIDS is actually worth a few listens in a row. The sound is an expected burst of noise with Brian King’s stoned vocals starting off understated before they rupture. He wails. And nothing makes better garage than contrast between deadpan and super raw vocals, plus yawning harmonies, a squealing guitar solo and some hard-hittin’ drums from David Prowse.

‘Jack The Ripper’ is the B-side of forthcoming single ‘The House That Heaven Built’ (which we featured yesterday) that will be hitting shelves May 15.

My heart is still going with the swaggering Cave. But that being said, I still really like this cover. So as a special bonus from me to you, here is the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds clip for the track. It comes from 1992’s Henry’s Dream, full of blood and gore and black and white photography. Because Mr. Cave does everything best.
