Live Review: Ivori soars on her debut single 'Bittersweet'

22 June 2018 | 1:58 pm | Max Lewis

Wollongong artist Ivori (aka Jess Locke) has dropped a stunning debut with 'Bittersweet', a refreshing twist on the indie-pop formula.

Debut singles can be a tough nut to crack. It's often make-or-break for an artist; the deciding factor in whether or not they blow up or go unnoticed in favour of someone. In the case of 'Bittersweet', the debut of Wollongong artist IVORI, there's not a doubt in my mind it's headed for the top.

Ivori has been working on features and collaborations for some time as Jess Brooker. 'Bittersweet' marks the start of a solo project that has been in the works for over a year, with a debut EP planned for 2019. With roots in playing piano and singing since she was eight, 'Bittersweet' merges this talent with defiant songwriting for a truly memorable cut.

Produced by Obseen, 'Bittersweet' is the kind of debut that is sure to turn some heads right from the get-go. Abstract percussion melds perfectly with melancholy piano and Ivori's powerful vocal presence. A tight buildup erupts into sharp synths and the titular vocal hook which is simple but absolutely effective. The song proceeds to build steadily with each section, adding layers of atmospheric sounds and even a guitar solo at the end. It's a track that never repeats itself and instead takes the opportunity to throw new sounds at the listener to keep them on their toes - to pull it off cohesively is a massive task that Ivori pulls off without a hitch.

'Bittersweet' packs a lot of punch in just three minutes, but it serves as an excellent introduction to Ivori. It's indie-pop with an edgy and experimental undercurrent, not afraid to try new things yet still remaining in the bubble of electro-pop. Ivori has dropped a fresh and exciting twist on the formula, and I have no doubt we'll be seeing more killer tracks from her very soon.
