Live Review: HAAi returns with crunchy breakbeat & a library of field recordings

6 March 2019 | 10:31 am | Caitlin Medcalf

It's nothing but big news for London-via-Perth's HAAI. We dubbed her an artist to watch in 2019 for damn good reason. She's risen to monstrous heights in the last twelve months alone, releasing a stack of insightful and achingly original music, as well as garnering praise from some of the industry's best and taking home some pretty stellar accolades, like her winning BBC Radio 1's highly esteemed Essential Mix of the Year.

Since then, it's been all guns blazing, taking her expert way of selecting across the globe to dancefloors all over. She's returned today after a little while with a new track, 'It's Something We Can All Learn From', and in true HAAi fashion, it's all about apt sampling and the structure of the track. This one comes to us from her label, Coconut Beats.

It's the first original work we've heard since her 2018 EP Motorik Voodoo Bush Doof Musik, and keeping in stead with her previous work, it's one for the wee hours of the morning to get you both introspective and moving.

Dominated by masterfully curated field recordings and a crunchy, industrial breakbeat, you're pulled in instantly by the chopped and skewed vocals, and as the percussive element to the track slowly leaks in, there's a finite release that's just enough to make you want to pump your fist.

Of the track and its composition, she said "This track was made from field recordings from Marrakech. I made it whilst in airports, on planes n trains around Europe recently. I felt like making something fun n fruity for the early hours in the club and here it is…"

HAAi has also just been announced as the latest DJ to host a slot on BBC Radio 1’s Residency.
