Live Review: Ghosting previews instrumental mixtape with ‘One Summer「 Spirited Away 」’

Melbourne producer GHOSTING (Andrei Eremin) has released his first track 'One Summer「 Spirited Away 」’ from instrumental mixtape debut Reimagining Miyazaki.

This is a new turn for the influential record producer, mix engineer and electronic musician, Andrei Eremin, who has worked with the likes of Chet Faker, KUČKA and Fractures.

These works are inspired by the stunningly beautiful minimalist soundtracks of the anime films from iconic director and Studio Ghibli co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki.

Reimagining Miyazaki samples leading motifs from several of the director’s major feature films, and transforms them into some truly phenomenal pieces of work. These are not only sublime for the ears, but also glosses any Ghibli fan’s gleeful nostalgia feels into an emotive listening experience.

‘One Summer「 Spirited Away 」’ is our first preview of the project, vivaciously transporting the unique and distinctive sounds of the Japanese soundtrack to an entirely new realm. Ghosting has strikingly crafted an ensemble of percussive beats, smooth sub bass lines and swelling synth pads to complement and accentuate the delicate lines of the sampled piano motifs.

The concept of the mixtape was initially inspired after the 15 year anniversary of Spirited Away's release, Ghosting’s Andrei Eremin comments;

'The mixtape started as a lightbulb moment to sample Spirited Away, one of my all-time favourite films. I took out my keyboard on a whim, cut up the intro to the film and within 4 hours I’d finished the best track I’d ever made. It was a sign. From there the decision made itself - I had to sample every other Miyazaki film.'

Becoming deeply invested in the project, Eremin travelled to Taiwan to visit Jiufen, a coastal mining town around 45 minutes out of Taipei, which is famous for being Miyazaki’s inspiration behind’s Spirited Away.

The full Reimagining Miyazaki mixtape is out on May 12 via Wondercore Island, so be sure to watch this space!
