Live Review: LISTEN: Azealia Banks 'Van Vogue'

1 June 2012 | 1:30 pm | Staff Writer

Need your afternoon smut fix? Have a listen to Azealia Banks' latest. If she don't get your mojo workin', nothing will.

AZEALIA BANKS is back with a short yet sassy tune that seems to sample everything from whistling to dogs and cats. The constant sample of a “woof” which I would predict is from a Golden Retriever (but then again, I am no Ranger Stacey) adds a playful element to the track. Banks spits rhymes at the rate of the spin cycle on a washing machine then breaks it down into a soulful plateau. It is this recurring juxtaposition in Banks’ style that sets her apart from the rest and makes her tunes memorable in an over-cluttered websphere. Basically, she's killing it.

The beats are spooky and echo behind Banks’ bitterly rude yet decadent lyrics. You can’t help but think that if ‘Van Vogue’ was a person it would be the sexy lovechild of a female Busta Rhymes and Azari & III. Wouldn’t that be a sight?

I’d definitely babysit.
