Live Review: Get nostalgic with George Michelle and his guest mix

18 September 2018 | 9:39 am | Caitlin Medcalf

Maurice Santiago AKA GEORGE MICHELLE just gets it. With a penchant for unforgettably nostalgic sounds bordering on industrial, garage and house, each release not only feels more and more like his own, but each release feels massively defining.

Aside from being the brain behind the George Michelle moniker, he's also a member of post-punk band Death Bells and a founding member of seminal Sydney label Burning Rose. Enthusiasts of the label have become particularly dedicated to his apt blend of post-punk, new romantic sounds with traditionally more electronic sounds and genre flairs.

There's not much to go off in terms of getting to know the elusive producer as he doesn't have any social media presence. However the project was documented by Red Bull in an interview titled 'Why You Should Know Sydney's Burning Rose Records'.He mentions the George Michelle project and reflects, "People from punk bands are now making electronica and techno, experimental noise, pop, house and hip hop…fans are fully into it. I think that’s really cool.”

2018 has globally proven to be a year of breaking free of genre conventions pushing exploration. In saying that, George Michelle is leading the charge of producers thinking outside of what's been created, and using his other interests to fuel the knowledge behind this project.

'Watchin Me' has been the first taste of this project, using the classic Rockwell vocal sample to drive this one. Of the track, we said that it was 'Practically made for a sunrise moment after hours of raving, George Michelle effortlessly amps up the emotion of his brand of house to get your body moving and your feels stirring, harnessing an undeniable groove and never once letting go.' You can read our full write up of the single here.

Throughout his guest mix, there's vocal hints alluding to his interest in post-punk and electronic music. He's found a way to marry the two, and I think in that process, this guest mix has turned into something incredibly special.

It's a masterful 20 minutes, and proves that it really goes to show that George Michelle is a dance force to be reckoned with.

The mix aired on Purple Sneakers on FBi Radio last Saturday, but you can check it out in full below. Catch Purple Sneakers on FBi Radio every Saturday night from 5-6pm by dialling in at 94.5FM or DAB+ if you're in Sydney, or by streaming online at
