More Hollow Coves More Hollow Coves

Hollow Coves, a two-piece independent folk outfit from Brisbane consisting of band members Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins, have ticked over 200 million plays on Spotify with their single, Coastline.

The track comes from the group’s 2017 EP, Wanderlust, which consequently makes up half of Hollow Coves’ most popular songs on the streaming service.

Coastline has been played over 201 million times on Spotify, far surpassing other EP tracks, such as Home (over 60 million), The Woods (48 million), Interlude (43 million), and These Memories (nearing 25 million).

Sharing their reaction to getting past the significant milestone, the band wrote on social media yesterday (21 August), “200 million streams on Coastline” with the praying hands and love heart emoji, accompanying a screenshot of the updated streaming figures.

Perhaps renewed popularity has followed Coastline since Hollow Coves released their Reimagined, Vol. 1 EP on 7 July 2023. That release contains three remixed versions of Coastline, starring Vancouver Sleep Clinic, LANKS, and Adam Hinden’s takes on the now-iconic track. You can listen to that EP below.

In 2021, when Aussie bands couldn’t tour around the country, Hollow Coves turned inward and built their own studio.

“Before doing music, I was a carpenter. So I decided to put my trade to use and built us a little soundproof recording booth for the studio so we could have some isolation to the noises outside,” Matt Carins told The Music in a behind-the-scenes making of their new Brisbane studio.

Carins continued, “At first, it was a lot of trial and error, but eventually, we thought we were ready, so we just started diving into it. Most of the songs were recorded entirely in our little studio. It’s pretty amazing how different elements of song can be recorded anywhere in the world and put together on one computer.”

The studio build followed a 2019 signing with 123 Agency, which preceded the release of their debut album, Moments.
