Aussie talent Tkay Maidza has made her fierce debut in triple j’s Like A Version studio, performing a rendition of SZA’s 2022 hit Kill Bill.

Hot off her recent shows at Splendour In The Grass and supporting Lizzo’s Australian tour, Maidza told triple j of making her first-ever appearance on Like A Version, "It's almost like being on the first episode of Australian Idol in 2001. And honestly, I had so much anxiety doing this and it's definitely Australian iconic status energy."

“It's literally a song that I would've wanted to write. It's one of the ultimate songs for me."

The epic cover comes following Tkay announcing the upcoming release of her highly-anticipated second album, Sweet Justice, earlier this week, during which she also dropped her latest single, Ring-A-Ling which follows on from the recent Flume collab, Silent Assassin.

“I’m never choosing compliance,” a defiant Maidza utters on the track; a warning from the Zimbabwean-born, Australian-raised, Los Angeles-based rapper, singer and producer and a mantra for Sweet Justice.

Produced by Two Fresh, Tkay says of the latest banger Ring-a-Ling: “I wanted to make an empowering song that tells others that my biggest focus are my goals.”

The forthcoming record marks a chapter for the Aussie talent, who after severing ties with old friends, found some new ones on the same creative wavelength: Canadian producers Stint and Kaytranada, and Flume, all of whom contribute to the record’s production.

The record is also set to feature collaborations with Lolo Zouaï and Amber Mark on Out of Luck and Duckwrth on Gone to the West.

Sweet Justice was a way for me to channel my emotions from what I’ve experienced in the last two years,” Tkay said.

“It’s a diary of things and thoughts I’ve kept to myself. Making the record was a healing experience and I’m grateful to have worked with producers who have inspired me throughout my career.”

Sweet Justice is out on November 3 on CD, standard black vinyl, and orange/yellow splatter vinyl, while those who pre-order the standard vinyl will receive an exclusive 7-inch of Maidza’s cover of Pixies’ Where Is My Mind?
