Spotify Has Acquired Heardle

13 July 2022 | 9:27 am | Parry Tritsiniotis

"Guess I'm done playing Heardle.... Nice while it lasted."

Spotify has today announced that is has purchased Heardle, one of the many Wordle themed trivia games that have emerged after the original app's huge success.

The game requires users to guess the name of a song after an accumulating audio preview. Spotify aims to utilise the game as a music discovery tool.

“We are always looking for innovative and playful ways to enhance music discovery and help artists reach new fans,” said the global head of music at Spotify Jeremy Erlich.

“Heardle has proven to be a really fun way to connect millions of fans with songs they know and love and with new songs and a way to compete with their friends as to who has the best musical knowledge. Since its debut, the game has quickly built a loyal following, and it aligns with our plans to deepen interactivity across the Spotify ecosystem.”

The game still stands as a standalone website for the time being. Previously the guessed song would direct the player to a Soundcloud link, now it links to Spotify.

The Spotify Heardle integration will begin in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand before heading to other countries. The company has not revealed how or when the full integration will happen. Spotify has confirmed that the game will stay free and that users will not need to have a Spotify account to play the game.

Spotify have not revealed how much they payed for the platform, but in their official statement they revealed that the game has "millions" of users.

The move has already hit a sour note with some fans, with the takeover deleting the old stats of long term users.
