Splendour Weekend Weather Forecast Revealed

21 July 2022 | 9:15 am | Staff Writer

We won't sugarcoat it. Bring your gum boots.

Well the car is packed, the tent is ready for pitching and the card is ready for tapping, but what about all those predictions of Splendour rain?

Well TLDR: It's going to rain.

The good news is that things should start to improve as the weekend progresses. The hot tip if you're camping and haven't arrived yet, is to get your skates on. From Thursday afternoon the rain really sets in according to the Bureau of Meteorology with over 75% of rain from sunset onwards (and not much less than that throughout the afternoon). A massive 10-20mm is predicted today (Thursday) and will continue heavily throughout the night which is going to set the tone for a muddy weekend.

Fortunately for Friday, rain will not be as heavy with only 5-10mm predicted. The chance of rain drops slightly after lunch, but you should still expect a high chance of showers. This should be good news for those wanting to catch Yungblud or Baker Boy. By the time dusk has set, the rain will be back, with showery conditions expected for DMA's, The Avalanches and (aptly) Wet Leg, although not as heavy as the previous night. If the forecasts are correct, it still might be a busy night under the GW McLennan tent for Cub Sport, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Orville Peck.

Showers should ease slightly later in the night, giving a small chance of a clear set for Gorillaz, but if I were Kacey Musgraves I'd still be feeling lucky to be in the tent.

The bad news for Saturday? It will rain all day again. The good news is that it will start to clear after lunch with a decent chance that the evening program will be far more pleasant. The Chats, Tasman Keith, PUP and The Jungle Giants might be unlucky with early afternoon sets, while Budjerah might be a popular choice in the GW McLennan tent. According to the BOM, by the time The Strokes take the stage at 10:45, there will only be a 30% chance of showers, which given the rest of the weekend so far is pretty darn good odds.

Moving in to Sunday and the picture is far more rosy. Of course you'll still be sloshing around in the mud created by the rest of the bin fire of a weather week, but we're looking down the barrel of a pretty nice day and less than 1mm of rain. There's still a chance of a shower in the morning, but after lunch the chance of showers has dissipated to almost nothing. G Flip, Grinspoon, Duke Dumont and Liam Gallagher should have a free run on the main stage and who could say no to the outdoors at that point? Having said that, if there's artists that could convince sun starved festival-goers to venture inside a tent, it'll be Mo'Ju, Holly Humberstone and Julia Stone.

The chance of showers does creep back on Sunday night, so Tyler, the Creator might face a light drizzle, but by that stage, who cares anyway? The good news for those heading home on Monday is you're in the clear and if the Sunday evening showers don't eventuate (and they probably won't if you play the odds), your tent might even be dry to pack away, even if your underpants are still wet from standing in the downpour three days earlier watching Violent Soho and having the time of your bloody life.

Will this prediction come to pass? Que Sera Sera..... Get excited, get wet and get amongst the best music event in years.
