Rex Orange County Is Heading To Australia This September

13 June 2023 | 11:19 am | Ellie Robinson

These shows will be ‘One In A Million’, so ‘If You Want It’ (that being a ‘10/10’ experience), there should be ‘Nothing’ stopping you from ‘Making Time’ to get in the ‘Waiting Room’ for tickets.

Alexander O’Conner – better known as the inimitable Rex Orange County – has announced his first run of Australian tour dates in more than four years.

The genre-bending stalwart will head Down Under in mid-September, taking to stately theatres and amphitheatres in Kaurna/Adelaide, Meanjin/Brisbane, Eora/Sydney, Naarm/Melbourne and Boorloo/Perth. The tour makes up for one that Rex was due to embark on last September, but ultimately cancelled due to “unforeseen personal circumstances”.

Tickets go on sale at 9am local time this Friday (June 16), with a Live Nation presale kicking off at the same time a day earlier (June 15). Another presale, for those who’d bought tickets to Rex’s cancelled 2022 tour, will also start at 9am tomorrow (June 14). You can find more info on ticketing for the full run here.

The last time Rex toured in Australia, it was in support of his third album, 2019’s Pony. TheMusic gave that record a perfect four-star review, with Carley Hall dubbing it “a straightforward listen that doesn’t bother with technical complexities”.

Rex released his fourth album, Who Cares?, last March via RCA Records. It sported three singles: Keep It Up, Amazing and Open A Window, the lattermost of which features a guest spot from Tyler, The Creator. He also dropped the standalone single THREAT in August of last year.

In a 2019 interview with TheMusic, Rex said of his kaleidoscope of influences: “There was definitely a lot of theatrical music around me and I was kind of doing musical theatre, but my parents listened to a lot of ABBA and Queen and put me onto a lot of pop music.

“I eventually found out who Kanye West was, and I loved Green Day and stuff I just hadn’t heard before when I was young – different kinds of rap and rock. These were things I was excited about at a young age. I think some of the stuff that I write stems from what I truly loved from those songs and bands that I originally listened to; I think that’s still in what I do now.”

Towards the end of last year, Rex was notably charged with six counts of sexual assault. Rex himself denied the allegations, and all of the charges were ultimately dropped in December when CCTV footage contradicted the accuser’s account of the events she claimed took place.
