PS Selected: Hudson Mohawke, PRINCI, Strict Face & more

1 August 2019 | 12:17 pm | Holly O'Neill

This week's PS Selected focuses on artists who have created mixes that shape disparate genres into cohesive experiences. Feat. Hudson Mohawke & more.

Welcome back to the column where we pluck the best mixes from all over the web and the world, bundle ’em together and call it PS Selected. Whether it was whipped up last week or last year, if it’s worth listening to it’s bound to be featured as Holly O’Neill takes you through the hours and hours of quality mixes uploaded across the net by big and small selectors alike.

This week SLUGABED, HUDSON MOHAWKE, PRINCI, STRICT FACE, and DJ LGCC for KIMOCHI are on selecting duty, shaping disparate genres into cohesive experiences. Their mixes meld opposing forces together, collaging their influences into a form of organised chaos.

Slugabed's mix for Bleep feels like wheeling through the radio receiver dial of an alien spaceship. Discordant sounds and free-form melody colour twisted selections of funk, dubstep and trap, assembled in a way that feels oddly cohesive. His mash of disjointed hip-hop with warm melodies, sprinkled with a dose of electronic maximalism, makes for an hour that feels informed by but nowhere near the realms of human genre.

PRINCI is a Sydney artist inspired as much by the slick club underground as she is by Top 40 stars, and her recent guest mix for Hotbox The Coup on Nomad Radio is a perfect blueprint for her creative tastes. Sharp and sensual club heaters are reshaped with cheeky pop vocals, chopped and screwed to fit the sludgy walls of pads and syncopated percussion. Hit play for a little under an hour of a masterful balance of the familiar and the foreign of pop and club.

Listening to their mix for Resident Advisor , you might not be able to pick Chicago label Kimochi's whole ~ vibe ~ and that's okay. The label pride themselves on curating bespoke collections of limited release vinyl, and have become known as a label without a clear definition but favouring "a rawness and texture". Mixed by DJ LGCC, this mix is as diverse as the label's catalogue moving from dub techno to experimental to scream rock to footwork. Kimochi translates to "feeling" and trust that this mash up of genre will make you experience the full spectrum of human emotion.

Short and sweet, this 20 minute hit from Hudson Mohawke is a self indulgent slice of unreleased bangers. Originally broadcast as part of the celebration of Warp Record's 30th Birthday on NTS Radio (also featuring a mix from Kelela), it's everything from festival trap to remixes and collaborations to experiments in bass phatness. All round it's super fun, and an ode to celebration of your own efforts as Hud Mo so succinctly puts it: "self love is key".

The usually club centric selector, Strict Face of Adelaide, explores wider territory in this mix for Groundfloor Radio. Pulling from niche crates, he pushes a driving energy above everything with even drumless tracks pushing vibe through their composition. It's two hours of everything from cheery house to UK funky to percussive techno from one of Australia's best DJs.
