PREMIERE: Mali Jo$e Taps Chicago's Mick Jenkins For New Single, 'Interventions'

14 July 2022 | 11:33 am | Parry Tritsiniotis

"There’s a certain sense of honesty that I displayed which makes it hold a special place in my heart. It only makes it better when one of your favourite rappers is on the song too."

One of Australia's brightest talents MALi JO$E is continuing his rise to the upper echelons of Australian hip hop, gearing up to release his forthcoming single INTERVENTIONS, which features Chicago rap mogul Mick Jenkins. Before it's official release tomorrow (on the 15th of July), Purple Sneakers is exclusively premiering the track below.

The Fremantle rapper first caught the attention of fans winning Triple J Unearthed High. In the last 12 months, he's released his debut EP, Hours Before Sunrise, which showcased that despite being in the infancy of his career, he's pen game and songwriting prowess is not to be messed with.

He's recently released flaming hot single WUSGOOD, as well as performing alongside Baker Boy on his GELA Australian tour. Now he turns to his most ambitious single yet, INTERVENTIONS, which features one of his very own favourite rappers, Mick Jenkins.

"I always knew the song was special. There’s a certain sense of honesty that I displayed which makes it hold a special place in my heart. It only makes it better when one of your favourite rappers is on the song too," Mali states,

Lyrically the track reflects on the trials, tribulations and roadblocks that the universe places in front of Mali in an attempt to limit his growth, spirit and mental health. He ponders lyrically above woozy, jazz-infused, churning, production by Dylan Guy, before Jenkins enters the mix and shares the importance of staying grounded in the face of adversity and chaos.

"I remember the night I got the verse from Mick Jenkins, I couldn’t sleep I was so excited. This is the best song I’ve ever produced and its honestly made me so confident to say “I’m a rapper” when I get questions from people asking what to do. I'm a rapper “on a one way trip to my destiny,” whatever that may be," Mali continues reflecting on his growth and career so far.
