Triple One prove their class with 'Time After Time' Like A Version

30 April 2021 | 1:49 pm | Parry Tritsiniotis

Triple One have once again wowed fans with their incredible Triple J Like A Version, covering Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time'.

Off their back of their groundbreaking debut album 'Panic Force', Sydney based rap stars, Triple One have again wowed fans with their impressive Like A Version, covering Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time'. Known to not be afraid of joking around and self deprecating humour, on paper the average Triple One fan may have expected a lighthearted cover for their big Like A Version moment. Instead they've taken a pop classic, perfectly suited it to their sonic imprint and built a deeply introspective original track off the back of it.

With all four members featuring prominently, the band explores everything from an acoustic hook, 3 rap verses all while appropriating the track's original sentiment perfectly. It's 'Time After Time's' pop sensibilities that attracted the band to the choice. In a behind the scenes interview, Obi Ill Terrors (rapper) and Billy Gunns (producer) reveal “I guess we like pop music, when it boils down to it,” “We flipped a Cyndi Lauper sample before so it’s good to revisit her….brought it into 2021 with a trap drum baking, 808s bouncing.”

It's most defining quality is its ability to still remain so Triple One. Common tropes of emo rooted guitar lines, booming drum loops and those classic Triple One heavily delivered bars all feature prominently in the song, acting as the perfect introduction and an easy buy in for undecided fans on the band. “For a lot of Australia [Like A Version] is the first time they see you so you want to introduce yourself and give your section of the story as well…it’s about not being loved, but someone’s always there for you as well," said the boys on creating the formula for the cover.

While in the studio they also performed a stripped back version of the lead single to their album 'Panic Force', 'Loverose'. You can check out both performances below, as well as the behind the scenes interview.
