Help Save Oxford Street's Iconic Indian Home Diner

Chowdry was told Indian Home Diner could have an “adverse impact upon the acoustic and visual privacy of neighbouring lands”.

The late night Sydney/Eora community is rallying together to try and keep cult adored, late night takeaway Indian Home Diner open for longer.

Indian Home Diner is located just on the Paddington side of Oxford Street, a stones throw away from popular evening destinations including Cafe Fredas, The Unicorn Hotel, Universal and more.

The iconic eatery is known for their  Indian style kebabs, aka curries wrapped in cheesy, garlic fresh naan bread.

It is now under threat however and at risk of being shut down early, to the outrage of its regulars and irregulars due to its cult status.

The take-away's owner, Robert Chowdry applied to Woollahra Municipal Council to garner and official license for its late night operation. In response, he was slapped with a notice that he would have to strictly close its doors at midnight on weekends instead.

Chowdry was told Indian Home Diner could have an “adverse impact upon the acoustic and visual privacy of neighbouring lands”.

Apparently it is not in the public interest to not let the venue stay open until 3AM and if he continued to do so he would be issued a fine.

A petition has now formed following a post by Bondi Lines, which has since garnered close to 4000 signatures. The survey caption reads, "Indian Home Diner (IHD) holds a very special place in all our hearts. Its hand crafted Indian cuisine made with love you can taste makes it the premier late night food hub in the world.

"Although most famous for it’s #5 Garlic Cheese Naan kebab with Alloo Chop, it is more than just a restaurant, it is a community.

"We have created a petition to reinstate IHD’s hours to what is right - 3am at the earliest. Only with your signature will we keep IHD alive.

"Robert, his family & team have been trading for 13 years in Paddington, do not let this dynasty stop early."

Even LIBERAL MP, Dave Sharma has describing the situation at IHD as a "tragedy". He took the chance to have a photoshoot with Chowdry, stating, "No good night out in Sydney’s east is complete without a stop at Indian Home Diner."
