The creators behind the Aussie Hip-hop documentary Burn Gently have announced that their film will be made freely available to the public through SBS On Demand following the film’s cinematic release on March 23.

The film hits SBS on Demand on September 7, with broadcasts promised on NITV from December.

“This project has been a genuine labour of love, 6 years is a hell of a long time to give to any single project!” said director Antony Attridge.

“But Hip Hop has given us so much, we don’t just want to be a flash in the pan with this film, we want people to walk away inspired to create – and that includes creating change in an industry that perhaps still misrepresents (at times) Hip Hop as a culture and not just a music”

The doco is described as “an exploration into the ins and outs of the Australian music industry, its growth, pressures, expectations and hardships, its success and failings”, and features some of the most influential artists in the local scene, including:

Co-creator N’fa Jones added, “Australia is known for its various genres and legends in Australian Music, and while we have seen many documentaries and interviews showcasing these more mainstream genres, we haven't had a deep insight into the voice and view of Hip Hop in Australia - until now.”

“Australian Hip Hop is a progressive, informative, multicultural voice offering an edgy intelligence that we as Australians deserve to hear and embrace. With Hip Hop being 50 years old, and having been adopted by avant-garde Australians very early on, this culture is very much part of who we are” says the films’

The project comes from Burn Gently Enterprises, which is comprised of artist and event management duo Antony Attridge and Kristina Hood, aka Sensible Antixx (directors), hip hop luminary N’fa Jones (co-producer) and Hideaway Productions.
