In the vibrant landscape of Brisbane's music scene, up-and-coming rapper Baby Prince is set to grace the stage at BIGSOUND 2023.

Hailing from the heart of Harare, Zimbabwe, and now making waves in the Aussie hip-hop scene, Baby Prince emerges as a fierce talent to watch, with his tracks taking influence from the likes of 2 Chainz, Lil Wayne and the late Michael Jackson.

Making his debut with SpriteSchool Vol.1 back in 2019, he went on to capture attention with his second EP, SpriteSchool Vol.2, which saw him collaborate with the likes of Mason Dane for the single Fall Thru, as well as other notable tracks BETTY CROCKER and COPACOBANA.

In 2022 he would go on to release Pretty Pearl — another collab with Mason Dane — as well as his celebrated single Zimbabwe.

Speaking about Zimbabwe in 2022, Baby Prince explained (as per Cool Accidents), “Most people think I’m American because of how my music sounds but I wanted to make this song and make it perfectly clear where I’m from and my story. I’m proud of where I’m from and this song is kind of like paying homage I guess, I mentioned in the first verse ‘I’m still doing this shit for my grandma my aunt and my sisters right down to my cousins’ because that’s how I was raised.

"It’s a little different from the usual mum & dad but I was raised by my grandparents/aunts because my parents were overseas in America for a large part of my life. I wanted to thank them for that & this way they can hear it over and over again.”

Baby Prince’s latest EP, Purple Rag Prince, is available now on all platforms, so be sure to check his latest tunes out.

Ahead of his appearance at BIGSOUND 2023, we caught up with Baby Prince to suss out everything you need to know about the rising rap talent.

Give us the story behind your name?

My Mum used to call me Baby because I was big as a child. It got to a point where I was 16 years old with my friends over, and she’d call me that, and we’d have to have a conversation after they left.

I was also the first boy birthed in my family after quite some time, so she named me Prince. I just put the two together and created Baby Prince.

If your music was a flavour, what would it taste like?

Lemon Pepper – exotic.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences and how have they impacted your own sound and style?

Lil Wayne, Future, Thug, Westlife, Michael Jackson.

What’s been the biggest moment in your career so far?

Acclaim All Stars Class Of 2023.

What's the most unusual or unexpected source of inspiration you've drawn from when writing a song?

Hour-long YouTube loops of African Wildlife.

Can you share a hilarious or cringe-worthy moment from your early days as an artist?

When I first started making music, I went by the name “Princey," and I’ve been embarrassed about it ever since.

What are the top three tracks or artists you’re vibing on right now?

  • IDC - Jordan Ward

  • Taylor Port Junkie - Rylo Rodriguez

  • Solo Steppin Crete Boy - Lil Yachty

What’s something that fans might not know about you?

I used to want to be a footballer.

If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Bad - Michael Jackson. It’s timeless. I've probably been listening to it for at least 15 years now, and I still don’t get tired of it. Other music would probably start giving me a headache after a while.
