Purple Sneakers' picks for triple J's Hottest 100 2019

23 January 2020 | 4:21 pm | Emma Jones

Ahead of triple J's Hottest 100 this weekend counting down the best songs of 2019, we're offering up our picks for who we reckon should make the cut.

With triple J's Hottest 100 this weekend, music fans across the world are waiting to hear the results of the listener poll as the youth broadcaster counts down the top 100 songs of 2019. Of course, by now, we all have a good idea who might take out the top spots with artists like Tones and I and 'Dance Monkey', Denzel Curry with his Rage Against The Machine Like A Version, Billie Eilish's 'Bad Guy', Mallrat and more all looking pretty likely, but what about the rest of the countdown? Here's who we're hoping makes an appearance in the triple J Hottest 100 this weekend.

NORTHEAST PARTY HOUSE

When it comes to anthems about being young and all the glorious mess that comes along with it, there's not many bands that continue to nail it as well as Northeast Party House, and with 'Magnify' and 'Dominos' released last year, these two songs have got huge chances of featuring in the countdown. From the soaring hook of 'Magnify' to the dancefloor filler that is 'Dominos', Northeast Party House well and truly exploded in 2019 so we've got our money on both of these songs making appearances. Cue madness in backyards all across the country when 'Dominos' kicks off.

CHARLI XCX

There weren't many singles released last year that could be classified as a true "moment" of the year like Charli XCX's 'Gone' featuring Christine & The Queens. Pop perfection materialised, it laid the groundwork for Charli's monstrous album, Charli, and set the internet alight thanks to its electrifying visuals and futuristic approach to pop. Now bound for Australia next month to headline Laneway FestivalCharli XCX looks set to capitalise on her 2018 entry with 'Boys' again in 2019, and 'Gone' is our pick for her to get there.

MALLRAT (FEATURING BASENJI)

Mallrat has had significant success with the Hottest 100 in the past, appearing in 2018's countdown at number 70 and number 7, and appearing. 2019 saw her have an even bigger year, and while sources are quietly confident lead single from her Driving Music EP, 'Charlie' looks set to make an entry towards the pointy end of the countdown, we wanted to hold it down for one of our favourite 2019 singles, 'Nobody's Home' featuring Basenji. The song all about "being in denial that you've got a massive crush on somebody," according to Mallrat when she spoke to triple J, is an incredible coming together of two artists doing things no one else is doing in Australian music right now. From its sing-songy hook that feels like a warm hug to Basenji's eclectic, meticulous production, we have no choice but to stan.

DOM DOLLA

Every year, there's always one or two dance bangers that make their way into the Hottest 100, and not many are looking quite as solid as Dom Dolla's all-out monster tune, 'San Frandisco'. Having crossed over from the dance world into the mainstream, 'San Frandisco' has been played just about everywhere across the country and beyond since its release including across the summer festivals thanks to Dom himself making appearances at festivals like Wildlands and Beyond The Valley. Set to make his return to Coachella in April this year now, Dom Dolla isn't showing any signs of slowing down, so having this track enter the Hottest 100 for 2019 would indeed be the cherry on top of an enormous few months.

BAKER BOY

Teaming up with the amazing Auckland rapper JessBBaker Boy leveled up on 2019 with the release of 'Meditjin'. Including a video that pays homage to The Carters' 'Apeshit', the rapper from Arnhem Land delivered one of his most solid releases yet, so we feel pretty confident in this one making an appearance on Sunday. Featuring incredibly tight bars from both rappers over an incendiary beat that includes yidaki, its a feel good anthem that bangs hard. Baker Boy himself said of the single, "Music is the best meditjin (medicine), it brings everyone together, makes you want to dance, love, laugh, vibe and feel and I wrote Meditjin with just that in mind. It's about making people feel the music and expressing themselves." What's not to love?!

The triple J Hottest 100 will be broadcast on Saturday, January 25th via FM and digital radios, stream it online or on the triple j app.
