The five unmissable acts at Nine Lives Festival

27 February 2020 | 2:19 pm | Emma Jones

Handsome Tours and Brisbane institution Jet Black Cat Music have joined forces to deliver NINE LIVES FESTIVAL across iconic Brisbane venues.

This weekend marks the start of something very exciting for Brisbane. Going down at the much-loved iconic music venue, The Tivoli, on Sunday March 1st, Handsome Tours and Brisbane institution Jet Black Cat Music have joined forces to deliver NINE LIVES FESTIVAL.

The multi-stage, indoor-outdoor, one day event is a Block Party for the ages, and coincides with the ninth birthday of Jet Black Cat. Not only will there be music across three stages throughout the venue and its outdoor carpark, there will also be market stalls, food trucks, sausage sizzles, record crates, activities and so much more on offer. Punters are also able to bring their canine friends along for added wholesome Sunday vibes as well!

A line up for such a big occasion obviously has to meet the brief, and that's exactly what Nine Lives has done in its first iteration. With an absolutely stacked bill featuring the likes of ALDOUS HARDING, ANGIE MCMAHONJULIA JACKLINKEVIN MORBY and so many more, it's shaping up to be a fantastic day for all involved.

Because we're so excited, we took it upon ourselves to narrow it down to who we reckon you absolutely can't miss if you were lucky enough to nab a ticket before they completely sold out. Featuring some homegrown favourites as well as some of the very best of those visiting, these are our top five unmissable acts for Nine Lives Festival. Take a look below and head HERE for more info.

Brisbane four-piece PINK MATTER have been cutting their teeth in the local scene for a few years now, but in recent months they've seen a shift from fledgling local band to bonafide stars on the rise thanks to releases like 'Wonder' and 'Soul Fruit'. Now counting the likes of HARVEY SUTHERLAND as collaborators, this neo-soul band deliver nothing but electrifying performances these days that will get you not only grooving but right into your feels as well.

In this writer's opinion, First Beige are the best band in Brisbane right now and are well and truly on the up. After a massive slew of shows in 2019 and the release of their Mirrors EP, they're now undisputed masters of the dancefloor thanks to their disco/soul/funk/jazz fusions and they'll be in full force at Nine Lives coming off the back of opening the Brisbane leg of Laneway just a few weeks ago. 2020 looks set to be their most exciting year yet, so Nine Lives could well be the last opportunity to catch them before they achieve world domination. Don't miss it!

While Nine Lives is unique in its triple-header headline approach, we here at Purple Sneakers are particularly excited to see Julia Jacklin take to the Tivoli stage this Sunday. After releasing what we think was 2019's best album in CrushingJacklin has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and having spent most of last year on the road, she will undoubtedly bring a fresh approach to this set after a bit of very well deserved time off to catch her breath. BYO tissues for this one.

A Purple Sneakers favourite, Handsome always delivers the goods. Her electro-tinged, sometimes-joyous, sometimes-heart-wrenching songs sit somewhere in between pop and RnB and its this genre-bending approach that makes her so exciting. With a big emphasis on freedom of self-expression and learning to love yourself despite what society might tell you, Handsome's set will be as uplifting, nourishing and wholesome as they come.

Making his way over from NYC, musical auteur Kevin Morby is gearing up to release his brand new album, Oh My God in April, so Nine Lives provides the perfect opportunity to catch in action before that drops. Defined as his career-best, Oh My God looks set to elevate Morby even higher as an undeniable force among the ranks of icons like Kurt Vile or Sharon Van Etten. Hopefully including some unreleased music, the enigma that is Morby is set to deliver an unmissable set spanning some of his very best releases.
