Artspace has announced they’re set to reopen its doors at The Gunnery, Woolloomooloo's iconic cultural hub, on Friday, December 15th, and Saturday, December 16th.

The grand reopening promises a weekend filled with captivating artist performances, talks, live music, and an exclusive first look at Wiradyuri and Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones' inaugural exhibition, Jonathan Jones: untitled (transcriptions of country).

Artspace Executive Director Alexie Glass-Kantor said, “We are so excited to welcome all back into our home at The Gunnery, ushering in a new era of art, culture, and community. With a spectacular lineup of performances, engaging talks and live music, the reopening weekend will be a vibrant  celebration, marking a significant milestone in the history of Artspace and The Gunnery.”

The festivities kick off on Friday at 5:30 pm with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Chicka Madden and an official ceremony at the main entrance on Forbes Street Plaza.

The exterior of the building will come to life with Dennis Golding's artwork, Colouring Memory, showcased on the inaugural Banner Project. This will be followed by the official opening of Jonathan Jones' exhibition, which delves into colonial transport, trade, and the acclimatisation of Indigenous elements during the era of colonisation.

From 8:00 pm, the evening will be electrified with live performances by Wiradjuri and Gadigal singer-songwriter Akala Newman and a DJ set by Rosano Martinez.

From 12:15 pm to 4:00 pm, attendees can engage in a lineup of artist floor talks and performances, including a performance from Wiradyuri poet and artist Jazz Money, the official book launch of Jonathan Jones: untitled (transcriptions of country), and a floor talk with Debra Philips on her work in the Ideas Platform, LOUPE.

The day concludes with a panel discussion featuring Artspace artist alumni, followed by open studios with the 2024 One Year Studio Program artists.
